Easy Homemade Applesauce

What's the best way to be inspired to made homemade applesauce?  Go apple picking, pick apples FRESH from the tree, and bring home a huge box of them!  Homemade applesauce is SO easy. I do usually buy organic applesauce in a jar most of the time since it's also SO easy to buy it. But homemade applesauce tastes much better.

We had so much fun picking apples (and pears!) at a local farm this past weekend. This was Little Guy's third year picking apples. He was really into it this year, making sure to pick only the good ones.

We also picked two kinds of pears from beautiful pear trees.

We had a fun beginning-of-autumn day out!

We also bought our first pumpkin of the season. Look at all those beautiful pumpkins in the pumpkin field - including Little Gal of course :)

We always love this picturesque American flag with Little Guy's great pose.

And how about homemade cinnamon applesauce? How did we make it? (Printable Recipe Here)

First, you have to have a cute helper choose 7 favorite apples from the box.

Then peel and chop the apples into cubes. (There's actually no need to even peel the apples. However, since I was making this for a baby (Little Gal only has 7 teeth!), I wanted to make sure it was easy to chew.

See how the apples are a little brown?  After you cut them, you can immediately put them in water mixed with lemon juice to stop them from browning.  However, it really didn't make a different in the color of my homemade applesauce. Especially since I added cinnamon!

Then bring the peeled and cubed apples with 1 cup of water to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for another 10 minutes or until the apples are soft enough to mash.

Then you need to mash or puree them. I like my applesauce a little chunky, so I used a simple potato masher (they honestly mashed just with a spoon!).

Add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and 1 tsp of agave nectar.

NOTE: I've made applesauce in the past with NO sugar, but these McIntosh apples were pretty tart. The applesauce needed a little bit of sweetening so I figured agave nectar was a good choice!

It's as easy as that. Yummy homemade applesauce, good for babies, toddlers and mamas!

Now I have to figure out what to do with all those apples and pears. Maybe an apple pear crumble is up next?

Yum! I love making fresh homemade applesauce! It really tastes so much more flavorful when you make your own! Plus the smell of apples throughout the house is welcome anyday!
