Fireman 3rd Birthday Party

We've sure had a busy and fun week of birthday celebrations!  It was Little Guy's 3rd birthday this past week, and we had his birthday party this weekend. But it wasn't any old birthday party. It was a FIREMAN birthday party

We had his 3rd birthday party at a local firehouse, and it worked out wonderfully!  Fireman was the game of choice for Little Man throughout year 2, so we thought it would be appropriate to "ring in" year 3 with a fireman birthday party!

We met some firemen....wait...that's not a fireman, it's Fireman Daddy! Yes, my hubby got to try on the real fireman gear and Little Guy just LOVED it.

We of course had red tablecloths, red and white balloons, and birthday and firetruck decorations. We also had fire hats and fun party bags for the kids.

The fireman-themed gift bags were simple yet fun and were filled with fireman stickers, a fireman pencil, a water squirter and allergy-friendly DumDum lollipops.

We also had a make-your-own fireman badge as a craft. It was something for the kids to do when they weren't eating, touring the firetrucks, or running around!

And we of course had FOOD. Since most of my blog posts are about food and how we manage Little Guy's multiple food allergies, I of course can't forget the FOOD! With a lot of help from my Mom, we had a nice array of yummy, healthy and allergy-friendly foods including:
  • Veggies and sesame-free hummus
  • Salsa and chips
  • Glutino pretzels
  • Baked ham
  • Roasted turkey
  • Three bean salad from this recipe
  • Quinoa pasta salad - I'll post the recipe another day
  • Fruit salad
  • Enjoy Life cookies
  • Vanilla birthday cake with vanilla frosting (gluten free and vegan)
  • Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting (gluten free and vegan)

This isn't the best food photo, but I'm amazed I snapped one at all!  The only thing that Little Guy couldn't eat was the sandwich rolls. He doesn't care about those since there was so much other food to eat...and cake...and cupcakes...

So why don't we get to the best part?

Mmmm, the cake.

Despite it saying "Birthday Happy" as my hubby pointed out (oh well :) , I was happy with how it turned out and tasted. It honestly tasted just as good - if not better - than a traditional birthday cake made with eggs, butter and white flour.

I made both the vanilla cake and chocolate cupcakes with Betty Crocker Gluten Free cake mix to keep it easy. I substituted applesauce for the eggs and followed all the directions. It turned out moist and delicious!

Moist and delicious!
The cupcakes were great too. I won't go into the details of the difficulties I had making these - that's for another blog post! - but I was pretty happy with the end result.

I ended up making the cupcakes at the last minute. I wanted to add red sprinkles to these to go with the fireman theme, but I couldn't find any allergy-friendly red sprinkles. I also thought it was better to go with pure white icing instead of adding fake and unhealthy red food dye.

Little Guy and Grandma had fun cutting his 3rd birthday cake and we ALL had fun eating it!

Happy 3rd Birthday to Little Guy!

Here are examples of some of the things we used to make it a fun and festive fireman themed 3rd birthday party!

Very nice! I bet he had lots of fun! Would red sugar be allergy friendly?

Now THAT'S a great idea. I will have to search for colored sugar as a cake/cupcake decoration!!!

I know! 3 came so quickly. It's so true that children grow up too fast!

Where can I find the cake mix? How much applesauce per egg? What kind of frosting? Your party looks fun and delicious.

What a fun party! I am planning a party next weekend for my almost 3 yo girl! I'm going all allergy friendly for her too - egg, dairy, and peanut free! I love showing people how she can still eat "normal" just by choosing the right things :)

Thanks Carrie! Yes, I feel like parties and social gatherings that we host are great places to show others how we can eat "normal". It's also nice knowing my son can freely eat at his own party - something that was very important to me - since he doesn't always have the chance at other bday parties. Good luck planning your party and have fun!

Hi Yvette, I'm going to write my next blog post about the cake to give more details since I've had a few questions about it.

To answer your questions though, I bought the Betty Crocker Gluten Free cake mix at our local Giant. I believe you can search on the BC website for where to buy it. I used 1/4 cup applesauce for each egg.

I used the recipe for vanilla frosting from The Allergen Free Baker's Handbook by Cybele Pascal. I'll give more details in my next post!
