ABOUT ME
I'm the mama of Little Guy (born in 2010) and Little Girl (born in 2012).  My husband and I live in the greater Philadelphia area and we both work full time.  This makes for a busy life and leaves little time for cooking healthy foods.  We also have to spend a little more time thinking about food because my son has food allergies to nuts, dairy, sesame and egg (outgrew wheat in 2013).

I created this blog to connect with the healthy living and food allergy community in a more powerful way, and share some great ideas for healthy and easy family food.

I have my Master's degree in Health Communication from Emerson University in collaboration with Tufts University School of Medicine.  I work in the health marketing area, and love when I can put my health communication and marketing background into practice!

WHY MAMACADO?
"Mamacado" is a fun play on "mama" and "avocado" (hey, why not have a little fun, right?).

I'm an avocado lover. I even dream of one day having an avocado tree in my backyard!
I have used avocados in my son's diet throughout his baby and toddler life. It's so important for babies and toddlers to have enough fat in their diet, and since he's allergic to dairy, avocados were a helpful replacement for the fat in whole milk and cheese.

My intention is for Mamacado to be a fun, creative and helpful blog for parents who are trying to feed healthy, wholesome food for their families and those who also may be dealing with food allergies.

I intend for this blog to be REAL and full of POSITIVE content. Right now I TRY to post once a week, and focus on content related to food, family and fun...with a food allergy twist!

MAMACADO FOOD
Mamacado food is healthy, wholesome and easy food that’s Dairy-free, Egg-free, Sesame-free and Nut-free. I also include some Gluten-free ideas since Little Guy used to also be allergic to gluten. (However, he passed his wheat food challenge in 2013 and now eats wheat!)

I’m not a foodie, recipe developer, chef, food stylist or photographer.  I AM a mom trying to feed her family healthy, wholesome and safe foods.  “Safe” for us right now means no egg, dairy, sesame or nuts for my son.  My husband and I do eat some of those foods, but keep them safely stored where my son cannot access them.  We actually keep no peanut-related products in our house since peanut butter is messy and difficult to clean off dishes (and since I’m happy with a SunButter substitute).

I like to keep it basic and easy.  I’m a working mom who needs quick and easy foods that please all of our palates (which right now includes a sometimes picky kid-palate).  Basic recipes and food are my saving grace.  However, I enjoy getting creative and eating tasty food too!

I love your food suggestions! I have to say Posey's FAVE treat are lollipops and I know it is because of her nut allergy - she has very few other candies ever, ya know? And simple roast chicken is the only meat she'll eat -- ever! : )

Yes, when we have allergy-friendly treats around here it's pretty exciting! Roast chicken sounds great!

I'm so happy that I came across your blog!!! My son who was also born in 2010 has severe food allergies to dairy, egg, tree nuts, peanuts and sesame. I prefer to bake GF but I've been having a hard time baking GF without eggs. GF recipes always call for so many eggs! Applesauce has been working great! I am going to bake the GF Betty Crocker cake with apple sauce for a party we are going to tonight! Your recipes look great. I can't wait to start trying some! - Alana

Hi Alana - Glad you found my blog! It's amazing that our little ones have the same allergies. Please share some of YOUR favorite recipes with ME too! I'm always looking for new things to cook for Little Guy to get us out of eating the same old things. Hope the cake turns out great for you. Let me know!

I have tried so many different recipes and as it turns out my son really just likes simple meals. Right now we are eating a lot of rice bowls. Usually made with a quinoa, brown rice and sometimes cous cous (my son is not allergic to wheat), chicken, broccoli and black beans. We did take wheat out of his diet (along with 12 other foods) for 8 months in 2012 when a naturopath diagnosed him with leaky gut. I also make a lot of veggie muffins. I try to cook and bake GF as much as possible. He also loves quesadillas (corn tortilla, daiya and broccoli), soups and pizza. I make a homemade dough with tomato sauce, veggie toppings and daiya cheese. He really likes smoothies. Which I'm always sneaking spinach and flax oil in! We are big fans of enjoy life products! Oh and of course avocados!
When we go out to eat it's a lot of French fries, steamed broccoli and grilled chicken or a hamburger patty topped with avocado.

The cake turned out excellent! I usually make wacky cake but it's nice to know that I have a back up cake recipe if I'm in a bind.

I'll send a few of his favorite recipes to you tomorrow. Where is the best place to send them?
I can't wait to make the oat balls!

Thanks Kathryn!

Hi Alana - I'm glad the cake worked out well. And what a great Mama you are to feed your little one such healthy food! I'd love to try some of your recipes. I'm always looking for something new for Little Guy. Right now, it's just a matter of having the time to find and make new things.

Oh, and then we have the 3 year old picky eater syndrome that just started. I'm constantly trying to cook food in new ways so he continues to eat a healthy and diverse diet!

I'd love it if you could email me the recipes at mamacado@gmail.com. Thanks so much!
